Becoming a Home Economics Teacher to Cultivate Students’ Life Skills

Home Economics involves reflecting on one’s own life, identifying challenges, and learning through practical and experiential activities about aspects such as daily life, consumption behavior, interactions with oneself, family, and the local community, as well as one’s relationship with the environment. It is a subject that equips individuals with life skills and problem-solving abilities to live better. In the Home Economics major, the focus is on training teachers for Home Economics in middle schools and high schools. The goal is to develop individuals with good practical teaching skills who can convey the significance and interest of Home Economics learning to students, along with life skills and problem-solving abilities.
The Home Economics major has dedicated faculty members in areas such as clothing, food, housing, household management, home economics, and home economics education. This creates an environment where students can pursue specialized and cross-disciplinary studies. Middle school and high school teachers dealing with diverse students with varying life environments and experiences require interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and address the needs of society and families. We seek individuals who are not only active in university classes but also actively participate in various opportunities, such as collaborative projects with regional food education activities, consumer lifestyle centers, and engagement in research on Home Economics classes in schools.

Characteristics of Major

Modern children have fewer opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for independent living. For these children, it is the responsibility of home economics teachers to not only impart knowledge and skills but also instill a solid set of values and judgment, fostering responsible individuals. In today’s rich and convenient society, the role of home economics teachers is becoming increasingly crucial. Therefore, in this major, we aim not only to provide the knowledge and skills in various domains of home economics but also to cultivate an attitude of seeking out and solving life challenges, the ability to discern the essence of things through deep consideration and a broad perspective, and the capability to support the growth of students. Our graduates are actively contributing to schools in various locations.
