Health and Physical Education

Developing Proficient and Practical Health and Physical Education Instructors Skilled in Both Practical Application and Theory

In order to produce Health and Physical Education teachers with sufficient practical ability at junior high school and high school the programme will cover technical subjects such as Theory of Sports/Theory of Health/Practical Skills of Sports. There will be an academic progression over the four years.

In this major, the goal is to cultivate individuals over the course of four years who possess specialized knowledge and exceptional practical teaching skills suitable for becoming health and physical education teachers at middle or high schools, or secondary education institutions.
To thrive in this major, students need a good level of physical fitness across various activities, a flexible mindset to excel in specialized areas, and a strong sense of passion and motivation. Additionally, our university actively promotes club activities, and we have numerous clubs that compete at a national level. These clubs provide valuable opportunities for students to enhance their technical skills in their chosen areas, develop instructional abilities, and foster skills in planning and managing club activities. Therefore, having the desire to grow through participation in club activities is also essential. Over the four years, students are expected to raise their expertise in their chosen physical activities and simultaneously acquire the competence to effectively guide students during classes and extracurricular activities as future educators.

Characteristics of Major

In this major, the focus is not only on pursuing expertise in one’s preferred sports discipline but also on training individuals to become health and physical education teachers capable of supporting students with varying levels of athletic abilities during physical education classes. During the “Practical Training” at a cooperating junior high school in the first year, students are encouraged to adopt the perspective of a teacher. In the “Fundamental Training” in the second year, they learn the basics of lesson planning. In the “Sports Methodology” course in the third year, students acquire skills in handling various sports teaching materials in physical education classes, preparing them for the subsequent third- and fourth-year teaching practicums. This major is distinctive in its approach, providing opportunities to implement high-quality physical education classes in middle and high schools, and gain expertise in coordinating sports programs such as sports festivals.

Curriculum Features

The specialized subjects in this major are structured around health and physical education, sports science, kinesiology, and the theory of health education. These subjects are related to the theoretical and practical aspects of physical education and health education in middle and high school classes. The curriculum includes both compulsory and elective courses. In the first and second years, students cover foundational content in subjects such as “Introduction to School Physical Education,” “Introduction to Health Education,” and practical skills in 16 different sports. By the third year, students delve deeper into both theoretical and practical aspects. Starting from the fourth year, students can focus on a specific area of interest through small-group seminars like “Sports and Exercise Science Research A/B” and “Health Education Research A/B.” This allows for a more in-depth exploration of specialization based on individual preferences and interests.
