1. Roles and functions of the center

The Research and Clinical Center for Children with Disabilities affiliated to the Fukuoka University of Education (hereafter cited as the Center) was established according to the law for education and research in 1987. Its purpose is to carry out basic and clinical research on children with disabilities, to develop educational methods; and to make a contribution to clinical education, to deepen joint research with researchers of universities and colleges in west Japan, and to make a contribution to the local community.

3. Providing opportunities of clinical practice for the students(undergraduate and graduate students) who will become teachers

3. Research Sections

The Institute has the following five research sections and many staff members in each section. Members are composed of full-time or Special Education (or other) Department staff, and researchers from universities in west Japan or from other places. They are specialists in clinical research, psychology, pathology, and education concerning children with disabilities.

Section I Developmental disabilities
Limitation in both intelligence and adaptive skills which manifests before age 18(mental retardation, Down's Syndrome, autism, and so on)

Section II Behavioral disorders
Behavioral disorders (brain injury, brain dysfunction, autism, abnormal behavior caused by learning disabilities, attention disorders, and so on.)

Section III Physical disabilities
Physical disabilities, profoundly/multiply disabilities(orthopedic impairments including cerebral palsy, profoundly/multiply disabilities, and severe and profound disabilities)

Section VI Hearing impairments and Speech and language disorders
Hearing impairments and speech and language disorders (developmental speech disorders, articulation disorders, stuttering, dysarthria and aphasia )

Section V Visual impairments
Blind, low vision sighted, and other disorders of visual function (disorders of visual field, abnormality of color vision, and multiple disorders with visual impairments)

4.Clinical Services

The institute provides services for children with disabilities, their parents and persons concerned in consulting, education, and training. These services are based upon the purpose of education and research in the university. Please understand this purpose, and make use of them. All of these services are free of charge.

1. Those who can receive the clinical services
The institute only provides the services at the left ( Research Sections); The institute does not provide medical services. Additionally, please make use of other organizations for emotional disturbance ( psychogenic disturbance ).

2. Clinical services
The institute has two types: one is to consultation for the parents and persons concerned, and the other is to educate children. Within each type of consultation, we have two types of service: short period of time, and one that continues for six months or one year.

Please call between 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
The Center is closed on Sunday, and on national holidays. And the Center is sometimes closed during school events, and summer and winter vacation.
