The Department of Special Education at the Fukuoka University of Education is the first department that offers six programs for undergraduate students in Japan. The aim of the training programs is to train special education teachers who will teach children to function in society independently.
The four-year curriculum is designed to prepare university students to teach students with disabilities in special schools and in special classes attached to local schools.
In the first year, students are introduced to the field, studying education systems, psychology, and the education of students with disabilities, and much more. In the second year through the foruth year, students learn about theories in Applied Behavior Analysis, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Education, and Pathology, in accordance with the curriculum of the major which students select at the beginning of their second year.
Students enrolled in the program learn instructional strategies to teach students with disabilities using a variety of academic skills. Students also participate in the faculty's educational and research activities at the Special Education Center which was founded by the Fukuoka University of Education. This option is one which is based on practicum, and is closely integrated with the student's course work.
